The outlook for 2023 is ridden with uncertainties. The lasting impact of COVID on the economy is still being felt in terms of slower economic activities and higher credit costs.  At the same time, past excessive monetary and fiscal largesse have fuelled inflation, necessitating higher interest rates and quantitative tightening in both advanced and developing economies. The slowdown of global growth will therefore likely last for some time, while a variety of risks – including unsustainable public and private sector debt, volatile capital flows and disrupted supply chains due to geopolitical tensions – also weigh on prospects. This presents potential financial stability issues. Banks, in managing risks arising from such an environment, their capacity to keep credit flow to the least defensive sector, such as SMEs, will likely be most impacted.

In this light, more concerted efforts among global and regional authorities will be imperative in promoting innovative, impactful and inclusive growth. Speakers in this session will share their thoughts and insights on the global outlook, as well as analyse, deliberate and propose the ways and means of building the requisite framework and infrastructure towards these essential goals.

Sustainable development has been an ever-present theme worldwide in recent decades. Fostering global collaboration helps to build a sustainable and inclusive economy, but geopolitical tensions and conflicts in recent years have been obstacles to achieving the targets set out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In this session, former Secretary-General of the United Nations (2007-2016) Ban Ki-Moon will share an overview of sustainable development, as well as his perspectives on how to foster multilateralism and mobilise resources to address the latest global challenges.
